The maize project led by Ecotrading in partnership with the women's cooperative with financial support from the ABF initiative, GIZ, and the European Union has experienced a failure in the MINTA district, Central Cameroon region. The 7 hectares of maize planted under this project only produced 400kg, which is about 1.4% of the expected production of 30 tons. This disappointing result is due to the climate change that has affected the region, with irregular rains and high temperatures that have hindered the normal growth of maize plants.
In response to this situation, Ecotrading plans to implement an irrigation system to address rainfall deficits and to further strengthen the capabilities of farmers in climate-adapted sustainable agriculture techniques. These measures aim to enhance the resilience of the cooperative and its members in the face of climate uncertainties and to promote more sustainable and resilient agricultural practices.
On the social front, the cooperative has faced a setback in its mission to support its members in improving their living conditions. Indeed, the maize project was supposed to contribute to improving the incomes of the women members of the cooperative.
On the economic front, the cooperative has suffered a significant loss, with an estimated 6 million CFA francs lost. This loss has significant repercussions on the cooperative's funds and on its ability to continue its activities.
